is graffiti vandalism or art

hello,
I’m here to speak to u about my opinion on the statement “is graffiti is a vandalism or an art”.

I believe that graffiti is an art and is not a vandalism my reason for this is because of what the meaning of “art” actually is. I researched it and Wikipedia says that art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. People have different opinions of what they think is art as they may not like the design or like that certain type of art. This is because we are humans and we all like different stuff. Some people in this world like graffiti what is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. most of the time this is made to make a picture, it is sometimes made for writing. i personally like graffiti because of its texture and how it looks. Graffiti among other arts are a skill to learn. people believe that it is a vandalism because it is sprayed onto walls. people can also paint on walls, so why would graffiti be a crime and painting wouldn’t be? Some people enjoy graffiti and find it creative. Graffiti has been going on the generations, this is a few thing about the history of graffiti. Wiki shows, The term graffiti referred to the inscriptions, figure drawings, and such, found on the walls of ancient sepulchres or ruins, as in the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. Use of the word has evolved to include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner that constitutes vandalism. The only known source of the Safaitic language, a form of proto-Arabic, is from graffiti: inscriptions scratched on to the surface of rocks and boulders in the predominantly basalt desert of southern Syria, eastern Jordan and northern Saudi Arabia. Safaitic dates from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. So u can see that graffiti has been here for a long time and i don’t believe that it should be cast as a crime. the only reason it should be a crime is if a graffiti artist does it on someone’s property without their permission but if they have permission or they are doing it on a local piece of property i believe that it should be aloud.
So this is my opinion on what graffiti is i hope this has helped some people understand what graffiti actually is and start seeing it as an art.

yours truly,
Ricardo

  1. Ricardo,

When I read this, I can really see that you have taken in some our classroom discussion and your have carefully thouight about what Art means for a culture.

Your piece has a clear structure but I would like to work with you about how to develop your ideas by using details your audience might identify with such as a short personal story or anecdote.

You have taken some information from Wikipedia and attempted to use this as your own. In order for you to use this as part of your speech, you would have to have a statement such as: ‘Wikipedia states that…’
